Disclosing the Use of AI
Princeton's AI disclosure policy aligns with broader conventions about AI and authorship in academic publishing. AI tools do not meet the criteria for authorship for many publishers, and many prohibit the use of AI-generated sources and images. Many publishers provide guidelines and approved usage of AI, as well as guidance for when/how to disclose its use. If this information is not available for a specific publisher, authors and reviewers should reach out to the publisher or editor to confirm their expectations for the use of AI.
Publishers emphasize that authors are accountable for their submitted work, so it is important to review publisher policies for changes for each project or review you submit.

High-school adaptation takeaways
- Use institution-approved AI systems when handling non-public school information.
- Treat material entered into public AI tools as potentially disclosed outside the school.
- Require students to state what tool they used, how they used it, and why.
- AI cannot be treated as an author; the human student remains accountable for the submitted work.
- Ask the relevant teacher, department, publisher, or project supervisor when expectations are unclear.
