Guidance for Faculty & Students — Generative AI in Teaching and Learning
Course permission and disclosure
Instructors may permit, limit, or prohibit AI and should make the choice explicit in syllabi and assignment directions. Students must consult the instructor when uncertain.默认规则Default rule Use that the instructor prohibits may violate the Honor Code.违规定性Integrity framing
Even when AI is permitted, students should identify the tool, explain how and when it was used, provide prompts, and, where appropriate, describe fact-checking过程留证Process evidence.披露要求Disclosure UVA advises acknowledgment of quoted, paraphrased, or incorporated AI content as well as functional uses such as editing, translation, brainstorming, and discovering sources.分级许可Tiered scale
Verification and responsibility
AI can produce biased, misleading, or false claims, misattribute content, and invent sources.摘录Excerpt Students must critically assess results, verify factual claims through reliable sources, and remain responsible for submitted work.核实责任Verification duty
Privacy and intellectual property
Students should not enter sensitive, personal, or proprietary information into AI systems. External services may retain account data, prompts, and conversations or use them for training.数据与隐私Data & privacy Instructors should not require accounts that demand personal information; UVA recommends protected institutional tools when appropriate.机构工具Institutional tools
UVA states that students’ original work is, in most cases, their intellectual property. Instructors should not upload it to services that add submissions to training data, and an assignment requiring such an upload must offer an alternative.课程规则优先Instructor override知识产权IP & copyright
AI detection
UVA discourages AI detectors for academic-fraud decisions because reliability has not been demonstrated. Student work must not be uploaded to a detector that adds it to a database, and detector output should not be treated as proof.检测器证据Detector evidence

High-school adaptation takeaways
- Require teachers to publish assignment-specific AI permissions.
- Disclose meaningful assistance, including brainstorming and editing, not only copied prose.
- Verify claims and citations with textbooks, library databases, or other reliable sources.
- Offer a non-AI alternative when an activity requires account creation or upload of original work.
- Use detector results, if at all, only to prompt process review and a conversation—not as proof.
