Student Guidance on Responsible Generative AI Use
As in all scholarly work, students are expected to present their learning and ideas as their own. Graduate studies provide the opportunity to deepen field-specific understanding and apply critical thinking and knowledge in academic and professional settings.
Red: GenAI may not be used in any form
Students must complete all work independently without GenAI assistance, including drafting, editing, or revision, unless explicitly stated otherwise. Use of GenAI in this category constitutes a violation of academic integrity.违规定性Integrity framing
Yellow: Moderate GenAI use is permitted, with restrictions
GenAI may be used in limited ways to support learning, but not to replace original thinking.学习理由Learning rationale摘录Excerpt All GenAI use must be disclosed according to course expectations.披露要求Disclosure
Green: Liberal GenAI use is permitted, with expectations for transparency and accountability分级许可Tiered scale
The green category allows broader use while retaining expectations for transparency and accountability. Students still remain responsible for what they submit and must follow the instructions attached to the course or assignment.课程规则优先Instructor override
Enterprise-wide Guidelines for Responsible Use of AI
IT@JH’s enterprisewide Guidelines for Responsible Use of AI outline how to ensure these technologies are used safely, ethically, and in compliance with existing policies. Of note:
- Start with approved GenAI tools and connect with JHU IT before procuring new ones. The university is working to ensure that AI tools procured on behalf of JHU meet its privacy and security standards.机构工具Institutional tools
- Protect confidential data. Do not enter proprietary JHU data—including clinical, financial, or business records—into third-party, unapproved GenAI tools. These tools do not guarantee privacy, and sharing proprietary or sensitive data with unauthorized parties violates university policy.数据与隐私Data & privacy
- You are responsible for any AI-generated content that you produce or publish. AI outputs can be inaccurate and misleading, may contain copyrighted material, or may be entirely fabricated. Always review and verify content before sharing it.核实责任Verification duty
- Adhere to current university policies. The use of GenAI is subject to existing university policies. Students should consult instructors before using GenAI in coursework.默认规则Default rule
When engaging with third-party GenAI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, it is important to consider information security and data privacy, compliance, copyright, and academic integrity.知识产权IP & copyright
Because GenAI learns by collecting, analyzing, and storing user-provided information, university faculty, staff, and students should never enter confidential information or sensitive data into any GenAI tools that have not been approved by the university. Sensitive material must be handled through the university’s approved platforms and within university policy and guidance.

High-school adaptation takeaways
- A red/yellow/green label on every assignment can make permission levels immediately understandable.
- Even “green” use still requires accountability; permission is not a transfer of authorship.
- AI may support learning but should not replace the original thinking being assessed.
- Students should use approved platforms, protect sensitive data, verify outputs, and ask the teacher before uncertain use.
